What exactly is a system administrator (Sysadmin)? Sysadmins install, support and maintain the various software on computers in an organization. They manage the servers, are responsible for the backup and the security of the server data.

A good starting point to become a Sysadmin is to get the CompTIA A+ training, followed by a job in hardware troubleshooting.

A CompTIA Network+ training gives you a solid basis to work as a junior network administrator.

A training for Windows (MTA / MCSA) as well as a Linux training like LPI will give you the good arguments to get a junior system administrator job.

Programming and scripting skills will help you to automate tasks, work around errors, writing tools, etc. Python is an easy to learn Programming language you can start with. Scripting in Windows depends on the used shell . For Linux you have also to determine the used shell.

A good Sysadmin does have a solid know-how in security. You can get this with trainings like CompTIA Security+ , but you can also get a specific training.

FOSS skills will be a door opener for a Sysadmin. Knowing software, programming and techniques in this area are a good possibility to get a great job.

A good Sysadmin likes problem solving and he/she does this in a systematic manner, even in critical situations (stay cool). If you are curious and willing to learn as well as you are able to learn fast, you will find your satisfaction in a Sysadmin job.
